Two Mediterranean cruises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The route looked perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’ve followed VoyageVerdict for some time, you’ll probably know that this wasn’t our first cruise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Far from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, we’ve been fortunate enough to sail on some of the world’s most respected cruise lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2693 Celebrity Cruises<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2693 Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each offered something unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Royal Caribbean amazed us with innovation and entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrity brought elegance and a refined atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Norwegian Cruise Line gave us flexibility, comfort and memorable experiences that kept us coming back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, after several sailings with NCL, I had reached Elite status<\/strong> in their loyalty programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That meant priority benefits, exclusive perks and a level of familiarity that every frequent traveller appreciates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without even realising it…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NCL had become my default choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whenever I planned a cruise, I instinctively opened the NCL website first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It felt comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It felt familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It felt safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udef3\ufe0f The Cruise Was Already Booked…<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

As planning for Europe Grand Tour 2026 gathered pace, I did what I had always done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I booked another Norwegian Cruise Line sailing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The beautiful NCL Epic<\/strong>, cruising from Rome to Barcelona<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything seemed settled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The itinerary looked good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dates worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The booking confirmation arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or so I thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because experienced travellers often suffer from one condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And curiosity has a habit of asking uncomfortable questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udd0d One Simple Comparison Changed Everything<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

One evening, I started comparing cruise prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because I wanted the cheapest holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who has travelled with me knows that’s rarely my objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I simply wanted to know whether there were better options available for the same dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I discovered genuinely surprised me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For our November departure<\/strong>, Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises were offering prices that were dramatically lower than the premium cruise lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not ten percent lower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not twenty percent lower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some cases…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost half the price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a few sailings…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Close to one-third.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I refreshed the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surely I had missed something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hadn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But something else caught my attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I checked other months…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference wasn’t nearly as dramatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was an important lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This wasn’t about Costa always being cheaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was about finding the right cruise line at the right time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

November had quietly become a traveller’s opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most travellers make one mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They compare prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very few compare value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I started digging deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What exactly was Costa offering?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer completely changed my perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ships operating our preferred itineraries weren’t ageing vessels nearing retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were Costa Smeralda<\/strong> and Costa Toscana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only are they among the largest cruise ships in the world…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are also among Costa’s newest generation of ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)<\/strong>, they represent a more modern approach to cruising, with improved efficiency and reduced emissions compared with traditional marine fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But technology wasn’t what impressed me most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything about these ships reflected their Italian heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The colours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The piazza-style public spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contemporary cabins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The elegant open decks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They weren’t trying to imitate American cruise ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They proudly celebrated being Italian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somehow…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That felt exactly right for a Mediterranean journey beginning in Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like every traveller, I did what most people do before spending their hard-earned money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I started reading reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

YouTube videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travel forums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Facebook groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cruise blogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thousands of opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some passengers absolutely loved Costa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others promised they would never sail again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, it became confusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then something from years of travelling came back to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After visiting more than sixty countries across six continents, I had learned one simple truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every destination has people who love it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every destination has people who dislike it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same is true for airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hotels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone looking for luxury may see disappointment where another traveller sees excellent value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither opinion is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They’re simply different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s when I stopped asking,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What do other people think?”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And started asking,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What kind of traveller am I?”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I looked back at my own travel history, I realised something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journeys I remember most weren’t always the safest choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antarctica taught me patience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuba taught me resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remote destinations taught me flexibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I closed the NCL booking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Took one last look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was about to sail with a cruise line I had never experienced before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because it was the cheapest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because someone told me to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But because it deserved a fair chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After all…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How could I compare cruise lines honestly if I had only experienced one side of the story?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes loyalty is rewarding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But curiosity can be even more rewarding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we cancelled certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And booked curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
