Why an NCL Elite Member Chose Costa Instead
“The best journeys don’t always begin with a booking.
Sometimes they begin with the courage to try something different.”
โ๏ธ Previously in Europe Grand Tour 2026…
By the end of Chapter 2, our dream had finally taken shape.
Rome.
The Amalfi Coast.
Florence.
Pisa.
Two Mediterranean cruises.
Spain.
Gibraltar.
Morocco.
Madrid.
The route looked perfect.
Now came the most important decision of the entire journey.
Choosing the right cruise.
After all, these two ships would become our floating home for almost two weeks.
And surprisingly…
The biggest challenge wasn’t deciding where to sail.
It was deciding with whom to sail.
๐ข Every Traveller Has A Comfort Zone
If you’ve followed VoyageVerdict for some time, you’ll probably know that this wasn’t our first cruise.
Far from it.
Over the years, we’ve been fortunate enough to sail on some of the world’s most respected cruise lines.
โ Royal Caribbean
โ Celebrity Cruises
โ Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)
Each offered something unique.
Royal Caribbean amazed us with innovation and entertainment.
Celebrity brought elegance and a refined atmosphere.
Norwegian Cruise Line gave us flexibility, comfort and memorable experiences that kept us coming back.
In fact, after several sailings with NCL, I had reached Elite status in their loyalty programme.
That meant priority benefits, exclusive perks and a level of familiarity that every frequent traveller appreciates.
Without even realising it…
NCL had become my default choice.
Whenever I planned a cruise, I instinctively opened the NCL website first.
It felt comfortable.
It felt familiar.
It felt safe.
๐ณ๏ธ The Cruise Was Already Booked…
As planning for Europe Grand Tour 2026 gathered pace, I did what I had always done.
I booked another Norwegian Cruise Line sailing.
The beautiful NCL Epic, cruising from Rome to Barcelona.
Everything seemed settled.
The itinerary looked good.
The dates worked.
The booking confirmation arrived.
Done.
Or so I thought.
Because experienced travellers often suffer from one condition.
Curiosity.
And curiosity has a habit of asking uncomfortable questions.
๐ One Simple Comparison Changed Everything
One evening, I started comparing cruise prices.
Not because I wanted the cheapest holiday.
Anyone who has travelled with me knows that’s rarely my objective.
I simply wanted to know whether there were better options available for the same dates.
What I discovered genuinely surprised me.
For our November departure, Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises were offering prices that were dramatically lower than the premium cruise lines.
Not ten percent lower.
Not twenty percent lower.
In some cases…
Almost half the price.
On a few sailings…
Close to one-third.
I refreshed the screen.
Surely I had missed something.
I hadn’t.
But something else caught my attention.
When I checked other months…
The difference wasn’t nearly as dramatic.
That was an important lesson.
This wasn’t about Costa always being cheaper.
It was about finding the right cruise line at the right time.
November had quietly become a traveller’s opportunity.
๐ฎ๐น Looking Beyond The Price Tag
Most travellers make one mistake.
They compare prices.
Very few compare value.
So I started digging deeper.
What exactly was Costa offering?
The answer completely changed my perception.
The ships operating our preferred itineraries weren’t ageing vessels nearing retirement.
They were Costa Smeralda and Costa Toscana.
Not only are they among the largest cruise ships in the world…
They are also among Costa’s newest generation of ships.
Powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), they represent a more modern approach to cruising, with improved efficiency and reduced emissions compared with traditional marine fuels.
But technology wasn’t what impressed me most.
It was the atmosphere.
Everything about these ships reflected their Italian heritage.
The design.
The colours.
The food.
The piazza-style public spaces.
The contemporary cabins.
The elegant open decks.
They weren’t trying to imitate American cruise ships.
They proudly celebrated being Italian.
And somehow…
That felt exactly right for a Mediterranean journey beginning in Italy.
๐ค Then Came The Reviews…
Like every traveller, I did what most people do before spending their hard-earned money.
I started reading reviews.
YouTube videos.
Travel forums.
Facebook groups.
Cruise blogs.
Thousands of opinions.
Some passengers absolutely loved Costa.
Others promised they would never sail again.
At first, it became confusing.
Then something from years of travelling came back to me.
After visiting more than sixty countries across six continents, I had learned one simple truth.
Every destination has people who love it.
Every destination has people who dislike it.
The same is true for airlines.
Hotels.
Restaurants.
Cruise lines.
Reviews are valuable.
But they are also personal.
A family travelling with children may judge a cruise very differently from a retired couple.
Someone looking for luxury may see disappointment where another traveller sees excellent value.
Neither opinion is wrong.
They’re simply different.
That’s when I stopped asking,
“What do other people think?”
And started asking,
“What kind of traveller am I?”
๐ Curiosity Has Always Been My Compass
When I looked back at my own travel history, I realised something.
The journeys I remember most weren’t always the safest choices.
Antarctica taught me patience.
Cuba taught me resilience.
Remote destinations taught me flexibility.
Every new country had once been unfamiliar.
Every unforgettable experience had started with uncertainty.
So why should cruising be any different?
If I wanted to become a better traveller…
I had to remain curious.
Even after sixty countries.
Even after hundreds of flights.
Even after sailing with some of the world’s biggest cruise brands.
Because the day we stop trying something new…
Is the day we stop growing as travellers.
๐ข Breaking My Own Rule
I closed the NCL booking.
Took one last look.
And smiled.
For the first time in years…
I was about to sail with a cruise line I had never experienced before.
Not because it was the cheapest.
Not because someone told me to.
But because it deserved a fair chance.
After all…
How could I compare cruise lines honestly if I had only experienced one side of the story?
Sometimes loyalty is rewarding.
But curiosity can be even more rewarding.
So we cancelled certainty.
And booked curiosity.
Costa would write the next chapter of our cruising story.
๐ก VoyageVerdict Smart Travel Tip
Don’t judge a cruise line by price alone.
Compare:
โ The itinerary
โ The ship itself
โ The sailing season
โ What’s included
โ The overall value
The cheapest cruise isn’t always the best.
And the most expensive cruise isn’t always the right one.
๐ Coming Up Next…
Chapter 3B โ The Cabin That Made The Most Sense
Should we choose:
๐ช Inside Cabin?
๐ Ocean View?
๐ Balcony?
Or simply book the biggest cabin our budget allowed?
The answer wasn’t as obvious as many people think.
And it also reveals a small family tradition that has quietly become our favourite part of every cruise…
Watching the sunrise and sunset from the ship’s top deck.
Sometimes the most beautiful view isn’t from your own balcony.
It’s from a place shared with the endless ocean.
๐ VoyageVerdict Community Question
Have you ever changed a booking simply because you discovered a better option during your research?
Or do you prefer staying loyal to brands you already trust?
I’d love to hear your story.
