Turning a travel dream into reality: 24 days, 5 countries, 2 cruises and hundreds of decisions

In Chapter 1, we discovered why Europe was calling us back.
Not because we had never seen it.
But because experienced travellers know that a destination changes when you return with a different perspective.
After decades of travelling across continents, hundreds of flights, and unforgettable journeys from Antarctica to the Caribbean, we were searching for something different.
Not just another vacation.
A journey where every part had a purpose.
A perfect balance between:
Adventure.
Comfort.
Discovery.
And unforgettable memories.
But every dream journey has one difficult stage.
The planning table.
And that is where the real adventure began.
🗺️ The Biggest Travel Puzzle
A blank map of Europe looks simple.
Countries appear close together.
Cities seem connected.
A few train rides here.
A short flight there.
A cruise in between.
Easy, right?
Not exactly.
The reality is very different.
Every destination creates another decision.
Stay longer?
Move faster?
Add another country?
Remove something else?
The problem with Europe is not finding places to visit.
The problem is deciding what to leave out.
🌍 The “Too Many Dreams” Problem
When you have not travelled much, making a Europe itinerary is easy.
You simply list every famous destination.
Paris.
Switzerland.
Venice.
Amsterdam.
Santorini.
London.
Barcelona.
Rome.
But after visiting many of these iconic places over different journeys, our approach was different.
We did not want to create a checklist.
We wanted a story.
A journey that flowed naturally.
A journey where every destination connected emotionally.
Because travel is not a competition.
The goal is not:
“How many countries can you cover?”
The goal is:
“How many moments will you remember?”
🚢 The Turning Point: Two Cruises Instead Of One
The biggest decision came when we started looking at cruises.
Initially, the thought was simple:
Take one Mediterranean cruise.
Enjoy the sea.
Visit a few European ports.
Finish the holiday.
But then we started studying the routes carefully.
One cruise could take us towards:
🇪🇸 Spain
🇬🇮 Gibraltar
🇲🇦 Morocco
Another route opened opportunities in the Mediterranean.
Suddenly, one cruise felt incomplete.
The idea appeared:
What if the cruise was not a part of the Europe trip?
What if the cruise became the backbone of the Europe trip?
That single thought changed everything.
🚢 Why This Approach Made Sense
After experiencing multiple cruises around the world — Mediterranean, Alaska, Northern Fjords, Caribbean, Hawaii and Asia — we understood something important.
Cruising solves one of travel’s biggest challenges:
Moving between destinations without constantly moving your luggage.
A traditional Europe trip often means:
Pack.
Checkout.
Transfer.
Check-in.
Unpack.
Repeat.
A cruise changes that.
Your room travels with you.
Your restaurant travels with you.
Your entertainment travels with you.
And every morning brings a new destination.
For a family journey, that comfort has tremendous value.
🇮🇹 Why Rome Became The Starting Point
Every great story needs a strong opening chapter.
For this journey, it had to be Italy.
Rome is not just another city.
It is a living museum.
History is everywhere.
Ancient roads.
Roman architecture.
Hidden neighbourhoods.
Amazing food.
And after multiple European visits, we knew something:
Rome deserves time.
Not just a quick photograph near the Colosseum.
Not just rushing between attractions.
A city like Rome rewards slow exploration.
🌊 The Amalfi Coast Surprise
Then came a destination that was not originally part of the plan.
The Amalfi Coast.
Sometimes the best additions to an itinerary are the ones you almost ignore.
The route was already complicated.
Time was limited.
Adding Amalfi meant adjusting everything.
But every picture told the same story:
Cliffside villages.
Blue Mediterranean waters.
Beautiful coastal roads.
Small towns that looked like paintings.
The question became:
“If we are already travelling this far, can we really miss this?”
The answer was obvious.
Amalfi was added.
🇮🇹 What About Venice?
This was one of the interesting decisions.
Many travellers asked:
“Why not Venice?”
The answer is not because Venice is not worth visiting.
Quite the opposite.
Venice has already given us wonderful memories from previous European journeys.
But one lesson from experienced travel is:
Sometimes you don’t skip a place because it is not good.
You skip it because another experience fits the story better.
This time, the focus was different.
The journey needed more coastline, cruising and Southern European experiences.
Venice remains a beautiful chapter already written.
🚆 Creating The Perfect Flow
After many evenings of research, the route started making sense.
The idea became:
✈️ Arrive in Rome
🇮🇹 Italy exploration
🚢 Cruise from Savona
🇪🇸 Spain, Gibraltar and Morocco
🚗 Andalusia exploration
🚢 Second cruise from Barcelona
🇪🇸 Madrid finale
Every connection had to answer three questions:
Does it save time?
Does it add experience?
Does it make the journey comfortable?
If the answer was no…
It was removed.
💰 The Hidden Challenge: Value
Planning a long international trip is not only about destinations.
It is also about value.
Every traveller faces choices:
Spend more and reduce planning?
Or spend time planning and create better value?
Our goal was not the cheapest possible trip.
It was:
Maximum experience for every euro spent.
That meant comparing:
Cruise options.
Cabins.
Hotels.
Transportation.
Packages.
Flights.
Small decisions that together create a big difference.
✈️ The Lesson From Building This Journey
After so many years of travel, one thing has become clear:
The best itinerary is not the one with the most destinations.
It is the one where every destination has a reason.
A great journey is like a good story.
Every chapter should belong.
